UPVA members were busy at last month’s WEVA expo in Orlando, Florida. WEVA’s Creative Excellence Awards were held the first night of the Expo, and for the first time ever UPVA swept the Post-Ceremony Production Category!
Here’s how they were handed out:
Gold Award—Pointe Digital, Williamson wedding
Silver Award—David Perry Films, Kulisch wedding
Bronze Award—Giant Brothers Films, Seguin wedding
Denver Riddle from HD Cinematic Films (who presented a few months back) received a finalist award in the Love Story category and David Perry Films picked up another Finalist Award in the Wedding Demo Production category. David also shows he has great editing chops, as he won WEVA’s Battle of the Videographers – Editing Styles!
Along with these great accomplishments , Mike Nelson of Remember When Films was honored with the Bob Lebar Vision award. This award recognizes WEVA members who have demonstrated innovative and unique methods that have been instrumental in advancing our industry to a higher level. David Perry studied hard and became the newest Merited Professional Videographer (MPV)—only the second in Utah, and 17th among WEVA members. The MPV represents the accumulation of training, experience and knowledge as a videographer.
We congratulate these UPVA members on their accomplishments and recognition!

December Meeting:
A big thanks to everyone who attended last nights meeting – we had more than 20 members show up for another fantastic lighting presentation by Steve Berlin.
Also – we wish to extend a thank you to the Sons of Utah Pioneers who have allowed us to rent their basement boardroom at an excellent rate. This location is larger than our previous meeting spaces. Not only does it allow us space for a classroom setting, we also have plenty of room to setup mock shoots and do hands-on seminars.
Thanks are also needed for Barlow Elton. For the last few months Barlow has been gracious enough to slug around his HD projector and speakers. But last night we took it to the next level when we brought in a Blu-Ray player. Those that were there witnessed our first true HD peer review and it was glorious. Even the standard definition DVDs were scaled up and looked amazing. It’s exciting times in the world of HD.
The meeting started with an industry spotlight. The video was an “Extreme Bridal” produced by Blue Skies Cinema in California. The bridal video was shot over three days, at several locations using many different production tools, props and shooting styles. The end result was an award winning Bridal Video that bills out for over $10,000. We’ll be looking at another award winning videographer in January. Following the industry spotlight, we were present with three peer reviews from UPVA Members.
Video 1: Lifelong Productions presented a football highlight video for a local team. It had some great time lapse effects and pacing/ editing. It’s also a reminder that when things slow down economically, there is work to be found.
Video 2: Anonymous Temple Video. This video was unique in that it was shot before the wedding day. The clients’ personalities really stood out and the video had no slow motion which is practically unheard of for a temple video.
Video 3: Barlow Elton Date Video. The shots were clean, well constructed and nicely edited. Barlow is one of the first videographers in Utah to incorporate a Cinevate Brevis into his filming. The Brevis is a lens adapter that allows for greater control of depth of field and the results were positively noticeable.

Tis the Season for Bridal Shows. If you see new videography companies at any upcoming shows, please let them know about the UPVA.
The meetings main presentation was given by Steve Berlin on lighting for video. Steve is highly sought after in the State of Utah for his lighting skills, especially among independent film makers. He has a great understanding of both the technical and artistic sides of lighting for film. Steve’s presentation included an overview of equipment terminology, uses, cost, and setup, as well lighting temperatures, effects, and moods. Steve finished by setting up basic lighting stage for an interview. Big thanks to Steve Berlin for an excellent presentation.
Next months meeting agenda will be emailed shortly
